The Doctoral Program in Law Studies, Faculty of Law of Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU), in collaboration with Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, held an International Seminar DAAD Alumni Trefen with the theme "Just Indonesia, Free From Discrimination and Violence" at the Hong Kong and Milan Conference Room, Adimulia Hotel, Medan.

FH-USU PR: Monday (26/08/2024), the Doctoral Program in Law Studies, Faculty of Law of Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU), in collaboration with Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta, held an International Seminar DAAD Alumni Trefen with the theme "Just Indonesia, Free From Discrimination and Violence" at the Hong Kong and Milan Conference Room, Adimulia Hotel, Medan.

 

 

 

This international seminar activity presented the main speaker, Prof. Thomas Stodulka, from the University of Munster, Germany, as well as other speakers, namely Prof. Ningrum Natasya Sirait, S.H., M.Li (USU/DAAD Alumni) and Dr. Phil. Dewi Candraningrum ( Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta/DAAD Alumni), and also attended the Attaché for Science and Research of the German Embassy in Jakarta, Annisa Fitria. The event was conducted by Souvia Rahimah, S.TP., M.Sc. ( Universitas Padjadjaran/DAAD Alumni), who acted as moderator.

 

 

This event brought together Alumni of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with experts to discuss intersectional issues related to women, people with special needs, and children from disadvantaged communities. DAAD is a non-profit organization funded by the German Government that promotes academic cooperation between Germany and universities throughout Indonesia.

 

 

 

In her welcoming speech, the Deputy Director of the DAAD Jakarta Office, Muji Rahayu Nutihastri, explained that DAAD Jakarta was established in 1990 and currently oversees activities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Timor Leste. Furthermore, she explained that this DAAD event is funded by Germany and that the focus of all DAAD activities is the Sustainable Development Goals. Muji Rahayu said, "We offer scholarships to individuals and funding for partnership projects between German and Indonesian universities. A little information related to the DAAD program: we are currently also opening a full PhD program in Germany, a bi-national / sandwich Master's in the fields of science, technology, English, and mathematics, as well as a new ongoing PhD and Postdoc program for research in Germany, for that we are very grateful for your permission to convey this information to students and young lecturers who are interested via the DAAD.id website," said the Deputy Director of DAAD Jakarta. 

 

 

 

The Dean of the Faculty of Law of USU, Dr. Mahmul Siregar, S.H., M.Hum, in his remarks and opening the event, expressed his gratitude for the cooperation and trust in the Faculty of Law of USU, especially the Doctoral Program in Law Studies, which DAAD alumni chose as a partner based on the conditions and situations of the plural life in Medan. The Dean said, "In terms of culture, language, religion, and physical geography, Medan is very suitable for intellectual and cultural exchanges of DAAD Alumni relating to a just and broader Indonesia. From an academic perspective, one of the most beneficial results of this activity is the publication of the seminar proceedings in the form of book chapters; we hope this book can increase readers' understanding of the concept of justice for all, without exception," said Dr. Mahmul Siregar.

 

 

 

The Chairperson of the Committee, Prof. Ningrum Natasya Sirait, S.H., M.Li, said, "This event is also an important moment to strengthen the network between DAAD alumni who are spread across various fields and encourage cross-sector collaboration in efforts to fight for social justice in Indonesia. In the spirit of friendship and solidarity, the participants agreed to continue to work together to face global challenges related to discrimination and violence. With the spirit of inclusivity and equal rights, this seminar is expected to begin a broader movement to create a truly just Indonesia, where everyone can live with dignity and without fear of discrimination or violence," said Prof. Ningrum Natasya.

 

 

 

The seminar featured speakers from various backgrounds, including academics, activists, legal practitioners, and representatives from international organizations. They shared their insights and real-life experiences on creating an Indonesia that is just and free from discrimination and violence. In the discussion sessions, participants were invited to explore various strategies that can be applied in combating discrimination based on gender, race, religion, and other forms of injustice that still occur in different parts of Indonesia. The seminar also highlighted the importance of education and public awareness as the foundation for sustainable social change.
