FH USU-Public Relations: Tuesday (25 November 2025), The Master of Law Study Program (MIH), Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU), successfully held an educational activity entitled “Thesis and Legal Journal Writing Training: Education on Original and Plagiarism-Free Academic Works.” The activity aimed to enhance students’ competencies in producing academic writings that meet high academic standards, are original, and uphold academic ethics. The training was conducted on Tuesday, 25 November 2025, at the Seminar Room of the Master of Law Study Program, Universitas Sumatera Utara.
The activity was officially opened by the Secretary of the MIH Study Program, Dr. Mahmud Mulyadi, S.H., M.Hum. In his opening remarks, Dr. Mahmud Mulyadi conveyed his hope that the activity would provide tangible benefits, especially for students of the batch 2025 and 2024, in developing competencies in writing theses and legal journal articles that meet academic writing standards and uphold the principles of originality and anti-plagiarism.

The training featured two expert speakers in the field of law, namely Dr. Wafda Vivid Izziyana, S.H., M.H. (Faculty of Law, Universitas Semarang) and Dr. Rosmalinda, S.H., LL.M. (Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara). The discussion and presentation of materials were moderated by Lesly Saviera, S.H., M.H. (Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara).
In her presentation, Dr. Wafda emphasized the importance of quality in writing. She expressed her hope that the material delivered would help students prepare theses or journal articles that are well-organized, thoroughly developed, contain elements of novelty, and adhere to academic ethics. “If you are able to write honestly and in a structured manner, it means you are already on the right path,” said Dr. Wafda, motivating the participants.
Meanwhile, Dr. Rosmalinda shared the view that an understanding of problem formulation, analysis, and argumentation in writing must be implemented immediately. “It may still be unclear if it is not directly applied to students’ writing. Perhaps we can move more toward practice with the students who are already present,” said Dr. Rosmalinda, encouraging an interactive session.
The most engaging part of the activity was the discussion session, during which a sample thesis draft by Fira, a student from batch 2025, was presented. The draft was reviewed and given direct feedback by both speakers. This hands-on practice session provided students with a concrete illustration of how to apply writing theory and avoid plagiarism in their academic work. Through this training, it is expected that the quality of thesis and journal outputs of Master of Law students at USU will continue to improve, thereby strengthening the academic reputation of the study program.
