Public Relations of FH-USU: Monday (September 29, 2025) — The Master’s Program in Law Studies (MIH), Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU), once again conducted a series of training sessions on thesis and legal journal writing for students, held at the Seminar Room of the Graduate Law Studies Building, Universitas Sumatera Utara.
This workshop was designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice. By applying internationally recognized competency-based training methods, participants not only gained theoretical knowledge but also honed practical skills through simulations and real-world case studies. As legal challenges grow increasingly transnational, law graduates are expected not only to master theory but also to apply it professionally in accordance with global standards. Universitas Sumatera Utara, particularly through its Master’s Program in Law Studies, is committed to addressing this challenge by organizing innovative and practical workshops on legal opinion writing and professional contract drafting.
The workshop was attended by 2025 Master’s in Law Studies students. In his opening remarks, Dean of FH USU, Dr. Mahmul Siregar, S.H., M.Hum., stated, “In drafting a standard contract, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) now takes less than three minutes. At the Faculty of Law, we have implemented AI technologies such as Alexis, whose algorithms are specifically designed to collect legal data quickly and accurately. However, it remains essential for you to continue developing personal skills and competencies so that your knowledge and expertise evolve toward greater excellence in the future.”
The Workshop on Legal Opinion Writing and Professional Contract Drafting was moderated by Lesly Saviera, S.H., M.H. (Faculty of Law Lecturer) and featured two speakers: Dr. Rosmalinda, S.H., LL.M., and Dr. Syarifah Lisa Andriati, S.H., M.Hum. In her presentation on Legal Opinion, Dr. Rosmalinda emphasized that “A legal opinion is essential in legal practice as it provides legal certainty for clients and forms the basis for sound decision-making. In drafting it, compliance with the Code of Legal Professional Ethics is crucial to maintaining the integrity and credibility of the profession.” During the session, students were allowed to create and discuss case studies collaboratively.
Meanwhile, Dr. Syarifah Lisa Andriati presented the topic Professional Contract Drafting, explaining that “Contract drafting consists of three main stages: Pre-Contract, Contract, and Post-Contract. The Pre-Contract stage involves negotiation and content preparation. The Contract stage covers the drafting and signing of the official document. The Post-Contract stage includes execution, monitoring, and necessary adjustments. These three stages are vital to ensure the contract operates effectively and benefits all parties involved.”
Through this workshop, participants are expected to strengthen their ability to conduct thorough legal analyses, build strong legal arguments in drafting legal opinions, and acquire practical skills in writing clear, effective contracts that minimize future disputes. Ultimately, the program aims to prepare students to become competent, adaptive legal professionals capable of meeting the demands of both the national and international legal markets through a competency-based training approach.
