FH USU-Public Relations: Thursday (20 November 2025), The Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU), organized a public seminar themed “Strengthening Political Parties as Pillars of Democracy,” held at the Moot Court Building of the Faculty of Law, USU. This activity is part of FH USU’s commitment to strengthening the democratic system through the enhancement of knowledge, academic studies, and cross-disciplinary scholarly discussions.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU), Dr. Mahmul Siregar, S.H., M.Hum, stated that the goals of the state as formulated by the founding fathers would be impossible to achieve without a sound political system and capable political “actors” who manage that system, one of which relates to the existence of political parties. “As an institution that contributes scholarly input, academic studies, and other forms of intellectual engagement, FH USU, through today’s discussion, seeks to reflect and provide its best contributions so that our ideas can be realized within the framework of a state governed by the rule of law,” said the Dean.

The seminar featured three speakers who are experts in their respective fields. The first speaker, Prof. Dr. Firman Noor, M.A., a researcher at the BRIN Center for Political Research, presented on Democratic Transition, Local Politics, and the Urgency of Election Implementation. The second speaker, Nelly Armayanti, S.P., MSP., a lecturer at Universitas Negeri Medan, delivered a presentation on the Affirmation of Women’s Representation in Political Parties and Public Office Candidacy. The third speaker, Dr. Mirza Nasution, S.H., M.Hum., a lecturer at FH USU, discussed Strengthening Political Parties as Pillars of Democracy in Indonesia.

The seminar was moderated by Yusrin, S.H., M.Hum., and was attended by participants consisting of FH USU lecturers, members of the Association of Constitutional Law and State Administrative Law Lecturers (APHTN-HAN), as well as students. Also in attendance were the Program Director for Democratic Resilience at The Asia Foundation, Mochamad Mustafa, and Program Officer Fadillah Sari.

The participants’ enthusiasm was evident from the high level of engagement during the discussion session, which enriched the exchange of ideas on strategies to strengthen political parties as the main pillars of democracy in Indonesia. Through this activity, FH USU hopes to continue serving as a constructive academic forum and to contribute to the advancement of democracy and improved governance in the future.
