Guided by Barran Hamzah Nasution, Assoc. Prof. Akmal provided further explanations on TWAIL during this session, specifically addressing the struggles within TWAIL, the Eurocentric nature of international law in the 21st century, and the role of TWAIL in shaping the future of international law.

HUMAS FH-USU: On Monday (22/01/2024), the Faculty of Law at Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH-USU) continued its Adjunct Professor activity as part of the EQUITY Program. Assoc. Prof. Akmal Handi Ansari Nasution from OP Jindal Global University in India was once again the featured speaker, and the focus of the third session was on "TWAIL in the 21st Century."

Assoc. Prof. Akmal reiterated the urgency of TWAIL for Indonesia as a developing country to break free from colonial values embedded in the global economic and legal systems, exemplified by multilateral agreements such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) in 1947.

GATT is seen as a means for developed ex-colonizer nations to maintain access to resources from newly independent developing countries. Upon closer examination, however, it becomes apparent that there are provisions within GATT that disadvantage resource-rich developing nations. TWAIL seeks to address this challenge with a Third World approach.
