The Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU) held a guest lecture delivered by a law lecturer from the European Private Law Institute, Maastricht University, Associate Professor Fokke J. Fernhout, with the title “The Implementation of Problem Basic Learning in Law Faculty.” This public lecture on the learning process using PBL (Problem-Based Learning) was given to lecturers in the FH USU environment.
Dean of FH USU, Dr. Mahmul Siregar, SH, M.Hum, in his speech, said, “This program is essential for us as a concrete step to prepare steps towards international accreditation, which at this time our faculty is also in the process of updating the curriculum towards an outcome-based education curriculum. Some time ago, the FH USU delegation visited several law faculties in the Netherlands, one of which was at Maastricht University, and we saw that one of the popular teaching methods applied was PBL. During the visit to Maastricht University, the USU FH Delegation was honored to attend lectures from various lecturers in tutorial rooms using the PBL method. Of course, this is something relatively new for us at FH USU, so we need to get the same knowledge, enlightenment, and understanding of how PBL is implemented and implemented. Professor Fokke J. Fernhout certainly has enough experience and expertise to provide us with knowledge so that we can discuss further, especially how we can apply this PBL in our curriculum, “said the Dean.
In his presentation, Prof. Fokke Fernhout focused on the core of PBL, and the what and how of PBL. Prof. Fokke Fernhout began his presentation with an introduction to PBL, namely about how to do PBL, which, in essence, includes the scope of the problem/problem, brainstorming/analysis, independent learning, and exchange of information. Prof. Fokke Fernhout also showed a video about running small group discussions in PBL, and from the video, the participants of this guest lecture learned how to implement PBL. The participants, consisting of USU Faculty of Law Lecturers, were also allowed to respond to what was wrong and what had been done well from the video that had been shown. Then, the participants discussed what the discussion leader should do.
