This public aspiration-gathering meeting brought together academics, religious leaders, traditional leaders, including the Sultan of Serdang, the Sultan of Deli, and the Sultan of Langkat, as well as community figures, youth organization leaders, and representatives of non-governmental organizations. Also in attendance were the Dean of FH USU, Dr. Mahmul Siregar, S.H., M.Hum., accompanying USU Vice Rector I, Prof. Dr. Edy Ikhsan, S.H., M.A., who represented the Rector.
In his remarks, the Rector of USU, represented by Vice Rector I Prof. Dr. Edy Ikhsan, S.H., M.A., expressed his gratitude to the Police Reform Acceleration Commission for entrusting USU as the host of the public hearing. He hoped that the constructive input from various elements of society would provide recommendations and a broader perspective for the Commission in strengthening the transformation of POLRI toward a more professional, accountable institution oriented to public service.
Vice Rector I emphasized, “Universities possess three main strengths that can support the reform process: academic strength, educational and public literacy strength, as well as partnership and collaboration strength.”
“USU views this activity as a strategic momentum, because reform within the police institution is not merely an internal agenda of POLRI, but a shared responsibility to create democratic, modern, and human-rights-based security governance,” he stated on behalf of the Rector.
Furthermore, Vice Rector I added, “Higher education institutions have a vital role as critical partners in providing scientific activities and objective, inclusive spaces for dialogue.”
Prof. Dr. Moh. Mahfud MD., S.H., expressed his appreciation to USU for providing facilities and a forum for dialogue to absorb the aspirations of the people of North Sumatra. According to him, the Police Reform Acceleration Commission continues to gather input and aspirations from various segments of society in order to formulate policy recommendations to accelerate police reform.
The discussion during the aspiration-gathering meeting proceeded by listening to and accommodating a wide range of views from academics, community leaders, religious figures, youth organization representatives, and NGOs. In general, the input and perspectives presented were grounded in scholarly and empirical data in accordance with the needs of the community.
