the USU Faculty of Law held a Summer Course Program 2022 with the topic "Alternative Dispute Resolution: Rakut Sitelu in Karo" which starts from July 13-27, 2022. The hybrid opening ceremony of the course was attended by 158 registered participants from 5 countries, including universities in Malaysia, Malagasi, India, the Philippines, and several universities in Indonesia.
FH-USU PUBLIC RELATIONS: Wednesday (13/07/2022), the USU Faculty of Law held a Summer Course Program 2022 with the topic "Alternative Dispute Resolution: Rakut Sitelu in Karo" which starts from July 13-27, 2022. The hybrid opening ceremony of the course was attended by 158 registered participants from 5 countries, including universities in Malaysia, Malagasi, India, the Philippines, and several universities in Indonesia. The line up of lecturers include Prof.Ainul Jaria Bt. Maidin, LL.B, LL.M, Ph.D (International Islamic University Malaysia), Prof. Akmal Handi Ansari Nasution, SH., MH., LL.M (O.P. Jindal Global University), Prof.Dr.Kurnia Warman, SH., M.Hum (Universitas Andalas), Mr .Matthew Pierre Zurstrassen (former Researcher to the World Bank), Prof. Dr. Runtung Sitepu, SH., M.Hum, Prof.Dr. Rosnidar Sembiring, SH.,M.Hum and Dr. Maria Kaban,SH.,M.Hum (Universitas Sumatera Utara).
USU Rector, Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si, on the occasion stated that that Indonesia is a unitary state based on law. As a state of law, the Constitution pays respect and recognition to the enactment of adat and customary norms in people's lives. Adat and customary norms live and regulate the living system of people in various regions within the framework of national laws. Adat and customary norms are also applied to resolve conflicts or disputes outside the court. North Sumatra is very diverse and hold a myriad of local wisdom. Furthermore, the Rector stated that this summer course activity aims to show the application of adat and customary norms, with focus on Rakut Sitelu, in resolving issues related to disputes and conflicts outside the Court. Through this activity, participants can conduct comparative studies and broaden their horizons about dispute resolution. For USU, it is an opportunity to expose local wisdom in North Sumatra and promote customary law so that it can be better known by the world community. In his closing remarks, the Rector also expressed hope that this event may help improve the international academic reputation of the university.
Dean of the USU Faculty of Law, Dr. Mahmul Siregar, SH., M.Hum in his opening remarks added that this summer course is a strategic opportunity for the Faculty of Law to bring together lecturers and students at USU and international legal education network for academic collaboration. Dr.Siregar highlighted that adat and customs play an important role in Indonesian society. Adat Law or Customary Law is a compulsory course in law schools in Indonesia. An understanding of kinship provides a deep understanding, insight into human relations and alliances also including the social, economic, and resource ways that are spread within a society as well as how conflicts or disputes in that society are resolved. The Dean also express hope that the summer course can provide insight and learning opportunities about Rakut Sitelu as one of the local wisdoms in North Sumatra, equipped with comparative dispute resolution sessions by lecturers and international speakers.
After the opening ceremony, the summer course activity was followed by the first session of the summer course by Prof. Akmal Handi Ansari Nasution, SH., MH., LL.M from O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat Haryana, India, with the topic “Global Perspective on Alternative Dispute Resolution”. This session was moderated by Siti Khairunnisa, SH.,M.H from USU.
