This Community Service (PKM) activity is motivated by Lake Toba, the world's largest volcanic lake in North Sumatra, Indonesia, being designated a UNESCO Global Geopark at the 209th Session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris, France, in 2020. The Indonesian government convinced the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) that the Toba Caldera holds significant geological and traditional heritage links to local communities, particularly in culture and biodiversity. In this context, UNESCO member states support the preservation and protection of the Toba Caldera as part of the UNESCO Global Geopark.
Through this International Collaborative Community Service (PKM) activity, the community knows their rights and obligations in protecting the Lake Toba environment. They must preserve nature and avoid damaging it by littering, polluting water, or illegally cutting down trees. As a UNESCO site, the community must maintain the culture surrounding Lake Toba, which is often linked to the sustainable lifestyles of indigenous communities. They are also made aware of their obligation to use natural resources wisely, utilizing resources such as water and land wisely to avoid damaging the ecosystem.
The lecturers on the Community Service (PKM) implementation team also provided an understanding of how students of SMP Negeri 2 Satu Atap Sibisa, Perdamean Sibisa Village, Ajibata District, Toba Regency, as the younger generation, can contribute to protecting Lake Toba from an early age. This includes participating in environmental activities and cleaning and reforestation programs organized by schools and environmental organizations. Students can also utilize social media to spread positive messages about the importance of preserving Lake Toba. Students can also actively participate in tree planting activities in the surrounding area, which can help maintain the balance of Lake Toba's ecosystem.
In accordance with the agenda of the USU and UMT International Collaborative Community Service (PKM) activity, themed "Geoeducation for School Children in Geopark Areas: Enhancing Awareness in Toba Caldera and Kenyir Geoparks," the lecturer-implementation team will continue the program with a Community Service (PKM) event at Lake Kenyir, Malaysia, scheduled for October 2025.
