FH USU PR: Thursday (May 5, 2025), Commemorating International Labor Day 2025, the Master's Program in Law Studies, Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara (Prodi MIH FH USU) conducted an Academic Collaboration in the form of a Joint Lecture with Master's Programs in Law on the theme "Seeking Solutions to the Rising Unemployment Rate Due to Termination of Employment," held in the Edutorial Hall, 7th Floor, Campus IV of Ahmad Dahlan University, Yogyakarta.
This Joint Lecture of Master's Programs in Law was initiated by the Master's Program in Law, Faculty of Law, Ahmad Dahlan University (UAD). This activity was the result of an academic collaboration between the Master's Program in Law, UAD, the Master's Program in Law Studies, Faculty of Law USU, the Master's Program in Law, Muhammadiyah University Yogyakarta, and the Master's Program in Law, Faculty of Law, Janabadra University, as a form of joint commitment to present solutions to national issues, especially the rising number of the Indonesian workforce becoming unemployed due to Termination of Employment (PHK).
This joint lecture, with the theme "Solutions for the Rising Unemployment Rate of the Indonesian Workforce Due to Termination of Employment," successfully attracted more than 100 participants, including master of law students, industry practitioners, business actors, and government representatives.
This event featured speakers who are academics and labor law experts from various leading universities in Indonesia, namely:
Prof. Dr. Fithriatus Shalihah, S.H., M.H., Professor at the Faculty of Law, Ahmad Dahlan University
Dr. Agusmidah, S.H., M.Hum., Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara
Dr. Nanik Prasetyoningsih, S.H., M.H., Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Muhammadiyah University Yogyakarta
Dr. Suryawan Raharjo, S.H., LLM., Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Janabadra University
In their presentations, the speakers highlighted the importance of strengthening labor protection regulations, social security policies for victims of Termination of Employment, and cross-sectoral strategies for absorbing labor through legal innovation and industry support. Interactive discussions also emphasized the need for synergy between academics, employers, and the government in creating an employment system adaptive to global economic changes.
As part of their policy insights, the speakers emphasized that the government's role is crucial in creating a healthy and competitive employment climate. The government is required not only to provide social security post-termination of employment but also to actively build domestic market resilience against global economic shocks. This includes protecting strategic industries, increasing domestic investment, and strengthening the MSME (UMKM) sector.
In addition, policy measures must consider macroeconomic impacts, including the potential multiple-effect derivative of prolonged unemployment. Difficulty in finding employment can lead to increased poverty rates, social vulnerability, and potentially an increase in criminal acts. Therefore, employment policies must be integrated within an inclusive and equitable long-term national development framework.
This activity not only enriched the participants' academic insights but also served as a tangible manifestation of the contribution of higher education institutions to addressing the social challenges faced by the nation.
Ahmad Dahlan University expresses its deepest gratitude and highest appreciation to all speakers, partner universities, participants, and all parties who supported the organization of this event.
