The Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU), once again demonstrated its commitment to addressing global challenges by collaborating in a series of activities with the Faculty of Law at Kyushu University and the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore. The activities were conducted in person at Kyushu University in Japan.

Public Relations FH-USU: Wednesday to Friday (May 21–23, 2025), the Faculty of Law, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FH USU), once again demonstrated its commitment to addressing global challenges by collaborating in a series of activities with the Faculty of Law at Kyushu University and the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore. The activities were conducted in person at Kyushu University in Japan.

 

On the first day of the event on Wednesday (May 21, 2025), the FH USU team led by Prof. Dr. Ningrum Natasya Sirait, SH., MLI, with delegation members including the Dean of FH USU, Dr. Mahmul Siregar, SH., M.Hum, Vice Dean I, Dr. Agusmidah, SH., M.Hum, accompanied by Vice Rector I, Prof. Dr. Edy Ikhsan, S.H., M.A, and a number of PhD and Master's students in Law from the USU Faculty of Law, visited the Faculty of Law at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan. This visit was a reciprocal visit following the previous visit by Professor Steven Van Uytsel, Director of the International Program at the Faculty of Law, Kyushu University, to the Faculty of Law, USU. The USU delegation was received directly by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Kyushu University, Professor Tokumoto Minoru, and Professor Steven Van Uytsel, Director of the International Program at the Faculty of Law, Kyushu University.

 

 

The main purpose of the USU Faculty of Law team's visit to the Faculty of Law at Kyushu University was to sign an addendum extending their cooperation agreement and to hold an international symposium titled “Competition Law in and for Asia: Navigating Diverse Economies and Digital Transformation,” organized in collaboration with the USU Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Law at Kyushu University, and the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore.

 

In his brief remarks, Professor Tokumoto Minoru expressed his warm welcome for extending the cooperation period between the Faculty of Law, Kyushu University, and the Faculty of Law, USU. He noted that the Faculty of Law, USU, is one of Indonesia's most influential law faculties and has significant potential for further development. The collaboration between USU Law Faculty and Kyushu University Law Faculty is expected to be realized soon through various international activities. The First Vice Rector of USU expressed appreciation and gratitude for the warm welcome from Kyushu University Law Faculty. “This collaboration is expected to support the development and advancement of the three pillars of higher education at USU Law Faculty in particular and USU in general. The trust granted by the Faculty of Law at Kyushu University to extend the collaboration and the commitment to support the activities of the Faculty of Law at USU must be utilized and maintained properly. The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) that has been amended and signed must be implemented through various joint activities,” said Prof. Edy Ikhsan.

 

The next activity will be an international symposium organized by the Faculty of Law at Kyushu University, the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore, and the Faculty of Law at USU. This symposium is a regular agenda item organized by the Association of Competition Law Experts in various Asian countries. The topics discussed at each meeting will always be related to developing competition law in Asia. In 2025, the international symposium was held at Kyushu University in Japan, with the organizing committee comprising the Faculty of Law at Kyushu University, the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore, and the Faculty of Law at USU. The symposium addressed “Competition Law in and for Asia: Navigating Diverse Economies and Digital Transformation.”

 

During this international symposium, which took place from Wednesday to Friday (May 21-23, 2025), various studies were conducted on economic developments in the digital age and their implications for competition law. The discussions were divided into two areas of study: competition law and legal aspects related to artificial intelligence. Speakers presented their analyses of the various challenges in enforcing competition law in the digital age. Finding a balance between enforcing competition law, innovation, and protecting society and consumers. Multiple perspectives on competition law in many Asian countries indicate that it is challenging to implement it in the digital economy era. Various approaches were examined in this symposium, such as those from the EU, USA, Japan, and other countries. The studies produced in this international symposium are critical as input for renewing competition law and its enforcement in various countries. The experiences and approaches implemented in multiple countries are essential lessons for developing competition law in Indonesia.

 

This international symposium was attended by approximately 150 participants, including authors and speakers. Participants came from various professional backgrounds, including lecturers, researchers, writers, advocates, and commissioners of business competition institutions. Based on their country of origin, participants came from various countries, including Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, India, and Malaysia. The speakers and authors from the Faculty of Law at Universitas Sumatera Utara included Prof. Dr. Ningrum N. Sirait, S.H., MLI (Speaker, Author, and Moderator), Prof. Edy Ikhsan, S.H., MA (Author), Dr. Mahmul Siregar, S.H., M.Hum (Author), Dr. Agusmidah, S.H., M.Hum (Author), Dr. Rosmalinda, S.H., LLM (Speaker, Author, and Moderator), Dr. T. Keizerina Devi Azwar, S.H., M.Hum, M.Kn (Author), Dr. Joiverdia, S.H., M.H (Author), and Dr. Robert, S.H., M.H (Author).

In addition to authors who are lecturers at the Faculty of Law, USU, some authors are master's and doctoral students in law at the Faculty of Law, USU, namely Hilbert, SH., M.H (doctoral student in law at the Faculty of Law, USU) and Agata Kurniati, SH (master's student in law at the Faculty of Law, USU).

 

The USU FH team also had the opportunity to visit the Fukuoka Historical Site in Japan, located at the Fukuoka Castle Ruins and Momiji Hachimangu Shrine (an ancient Shinto shrine), on Friday (May 23, 2025). The purpose of this visit was to learn more about the history and culture of Fukuoka, Japan.
